Notes
Park Species Detail: Bison were established at Fort Niobrara in January 1913. The source of this herd was a Mr. W. Gilbert of Nebraska who supplied 6 bison and Yellowstone Park which supplied two bulls. The herd grew rapidly to 140 animals by 1931. The bison were maintained at this level until 1944 when it was allowed to increase again to about 225 in 1950. The population again increased in 1965 to a high of 345 in 1968 and is back down to summer population size of 275 animals. Source:1977 thesis by John M. Bartholow from Colorado State University entitled, Fort Niobrara Refuge: Big Game Management Modeling.
