This species is widespread in western North America and southern Canada. In the eastern United States it is widespread from Maine to Michigan, but becomes more restricted to higher elevations in the southeast. (Oliver Flint, 1/25/10)

Notes
Although the larvae are debris carriers, they do not form as dense a packet as in most other species. On the west coast, at least, the species overwinters as a third instar larvae within the pupal cocoon; pupation taking place in spring. (Oliver Flint, 1/25/10)
