Notes
Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Witt (1997) lists the Wood Duck as a common breeder, but does not list any evidence for breeding on the island. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if this species was recorded within park boundaries. Long (1987): increased on MDI during the past 60 years; broods of young have been observed "on several ponds", but no details are given. Russell (1984?) Fairly common spring migrant, uncommon to fairly common breeder, common fall migrant. 65 were noted in Fawn Pond on 1 October 1968 (D. Smith and W. Russell) and 1 was noted near Aunt Betty's Pond on 16 November 1963 (H. Mendall). Beaver Dam Pond, Long Pond (Seal Harbor), and the upper end of the Bass Harbor Marsh stream have always been good spots. In the fall, Fawn Pond and Aunt Betty's Pond have had the largest concentrations. Broods have been observed but no nests have been found in spite of an active program of nest box erection. Bond (1969) increased on MDI during the past 50 years and now is widespread. Boods of young have been seen on several ponds. Bond (19??) Summer resident of MDI; rare. Juvenile individuals have been observed. Long (1951) 2 males were seen on Hodgdons Pond on 9 June 1950. Tyson and Bond (1941): Very rare on MDI. Sullivan (1937): rare summer resident, April - November; nest on Lower Hadlock Pond observed in June 1926; probably breeds on Bass Harbor Marsh Eliot (1931) Not observed on MDI during June or July 1931 but previously reported from the island;, Park Species Data Source: Connery et al. (1998); Witt (1997); Sharp (1997); Russell (1984?); Long (1951); Sullivan (1937)
