Updates to subspecies based from most recent Gill, Donsker and Rasmussen list from the IOC - Master Lists - IOC Word Bird List (worldbirdnames.org), version 11.2.
Park Species Detail: During the 2003-2004 shorebird, seabird and waterbird inventory of PUHO, the black-crowned night heron was the most numerous and frequently observed species. An average of 2.82 herons was observed per survey and at least one individual was observed on all but two of the 17 surveys (88.2%). Six herons were observed on 20 October 2003.
