Tulane University voucher specimen by Nolfo #7 was misidentified (as Schoenoplectus americanus) and redetermined to by Schoenoplectus pungens by Ferguson and Gunn-Zumo, 2007. LSU voucher specimen by Platt s.n. was identified as Schoenoplectus americanus by D.M. Ferguson (2008). It was found along the long term ecological transect in 2004.
