Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Plant species currently documented from Maryland but not successfully updated at previously reported sites in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) during this survey. Maxon, 1953: Known only from the mainland. Lea, 2000: Carex shortiana Dewey (Short's Sedge) Infrequent. In moist swales in channel shelf woodlands at Chain Bridge Flats and Fletcher's Floodplain. Also at edge of pond, Great Falls Park, Virginia. This species is regarded as highly rare in Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994), where it is primarily restricted to rich soils along the Potomac, and is a watchlist species in Virginia (Killeffer, 1999). Mid-May to early June. 1566 (US); Tanaka s.n.(NA); 1190,1689 (Tawes); Grimshaw 842a (Grfa). Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Short's sedge (Carex shortiana), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successllly updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. A few small groups of plants are widely scattered over a large area from Chain Bridge down stream for a kilometer. . This is a healthy and viable population growing in fairly remote locations. Suitable habitat for Short's sedge is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found in Fletchers Floodplain Survey Site. Found at 4 sites. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C. Also listed in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species currently documented from Maryland but were not successfully updated at previously recorded sites in the gorge during this survey (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) . Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Wiegand, 1995: One unconfirmed occurrence in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Lea, 2000;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 2001b;Wiegand, 2001;
