Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) and Long (1987) reports this species in areas adjacent to the park. Long (1987): Formerly more common on MDI; now scarce; at least 3 nests (in nest boxes) were reported in 1968. Russell (1984?) rare to uncommon spring migrant and breeder; uncommon fall migrant. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Bond (1969) formerly often seen on MDI; a decided increase during the late 1960's; at least 3 nesting boxes were occupied by bluebirds in 1968. Bond (19??) not common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Long (1953) scattered records occurred in the past on MDI, but appeared to have been only for wandering birds; several nests were found in 1950. During 1950-52, species is a local summer resident on MDI. Long (1951) nest found on 14 June 1950 on MDI. Tyson and Bond (1941): One of the rarest summer residents of ANP; lately found only in the vicinity of Town Hill, Bar Harbor, and at Bass Harbor; a pair nested in a bird box (in a garden) in Bar Harbor in June 1939. Sullivan (1937): Not uncommon summer resident April to October in certain localities; found about Town Hill, Eden, Southwest Harbor, and Pretty Marsh (Pellew). Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during July 1931; several on roadside wires at Town Hill and eastwards. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 11 June 1916. Allen (1899): "A few heard July 22, 1881, flying over and several seen at Southwest Harbor by C.W. Townsend. One seen at Southwest Harbor by C.F. Batchelder, Aug. 13, 1900., Park Species Data Source: Duley and North (1984) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Witt (1997) breed in very small numbers in the MDI area, although no records reported from within park boundaries. Adamus (1983) breeding in southwestern Maine, scattered breeding throughout the rest of the state.
