Nativeness Notes
Sigmodon hispidus ranges the southeastern and south central United States and across both Carolinas (Whitaker, 1980; Webster et al., 1985). In York County I found this species in the following topographic map quadrangles: Clover, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, Rock Hill West, and Van Wyck. Cloninger et al. (1977) reported this species in the Tirzah quad of York County and the Catawba Northeast quad of Lancaster County. The Charleston Museum also collected a specimen in York County August 23, 1928, and in Lancaster County June 31, 1933. Lee et al. (1982) reported S. hispidus in Mecklenburg and Union Counties, North Carolina. Habitats included dry upland power transmission corridor, wet lowland power transmission corridor, oldfield and forest margins. I collected more field data (21 captures or field sightings) on Sigmodon hispidus than any other rodent species. I noted very early in the field surveys that S. hispidus showed a preference for areas covered with honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.). In 16 of 28 occurrences of Sigmodon, Lonicera sp. was present in the habitat. Webster et.al. (1985) also noted this relationship, saying that the tangled vegetation provided food and shelter from predators.; Data Source: Fields 2000
