Occurrence Notes
A rare permanent resident of low-elevation desertscrub and riparian habitats throughout western half of the region. It is often seen in cottonwood patches, where it has been recorded as far upstream as Indian Gardens. Although it is seen irregularly in pinyon-juniper woodlands on the rims, two recent records from east of Desert View represent the northeastern limit of the species’ range in Arizona. One was near Comanche Point in Dec 2005 (Charles T. LaRue), and on 16 Jun 2009 (Brian P. Gatlin), two were seen southeast of Desert View, only 600 meters west of the boundary of the Navajo Indian Reservation, where the species has never been recorded. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
