Notes
Park Species Detail: Lea, Chris April, 2000: This annual salt marsh species was considered to be locally frequent and widely distributed in [low] salt marshes by Hill (1986), and this assessment was found to be accurate during the present survey. It is less common than S. europea L. Its phenology may render it less conspicuous during early season surveys. Based on Assateague populations alone, the rank, based on the Maryland Heritage Biodiversity Conservation Program, of this species in Maryland would probably be S3S4 (S3=Rare to uncommon; usually between 20 and 100 populations or occurrences; may have fewer occurrences, but with a large number of individuals in some populations; may be susceptible to large-scale disturbances.
S4=Common; usually >100 populations or occurrences, but may be fewer with many large populations; may be restricted to only a portion of the state; usually not susceptible to immediate threats). Specific management or conservation actions are not needed./Hamilton, 2004: Voucher specimens probable at MARY and CNWR./Hill, 1986: Native. Annual succulent herb. Aug.-Oct. Salt marshes, salt pans and washes. Infrequent to locally frequent, especially at the Fox Hills levels, but also in salt marshes throughout. Considered infrequent by the MNHP. (Higgins #173).
