Notes
Park Species Detail: Voucher specimen probable at CNWR/ Lea, C, April, 2000:Although apparently restricted to Assateague Island in Maryland, this species is a fairly common and widespread grass on the island. It is a characteristic species of dry open woodlands and dwarf shrublands dominated by Hudsonia tomentosa Nuttall, where large colonies have been seen by Hamilton and other authors. Although it is relatively distinctive and easily identified, it is an annual species that does not become apparent until late summer; this may account for the relatively few previous reports. It seems secure on the island and protection of adequate stands of natural vegetation dominated by H. tomentosa should be adequate for conservation. Based on Assateague populations alone, the Maryland Heritage Biodiversity Program recommends a rank change to S3=Rare to uncommon; usually between 20 and 100 populations or occurrences; may have fewer occurrences, but with a large number of individuals in some populations; may be susceptible to large-scale disturbances. Hill, 1986: Native. Annual herb. Aug.-Sept.Hudsonia dunes, also in dunegrass and along roadsides. Frequent on Assateague, especially between Fox Hills and McCabe house. See Vegetation Mapping Report. Infrequent in MD, restricted to coastal dunes. No Higgins specimens were found at MARY. (Higgins #31). Fruits attach to fur, probably distributed by the wild ponies.MD & VA?
