No longer present on island due to forest maturation after widespread fires in early 1900's (A. Egan, pers. comm., August 2005). Extirpated (Janke, Peterson, Peterson, and Lindsay 1994). The earliest record is from 1884; it is not known whether this bird occurred naturally or was introduced (Johnsson, Shelton, and Jordan 1982). Name change sequence: 1957 (Pedioecetes phasianellus) and 1983 (Tympanuchus phasianellus) as per The History of North American Bird Names in the American Ornithologists' Union Checklists 1886 - 2000.
