    Declined in recent decades. Last commoinly seen along Clingmans Dome Road, but this area now dominated by coyotes. Assessing the genetic and conservation status of the red fox should be a priority for the park.

Notes
Park Species Detail: ATBI Sensitivity = Park-Only Species Notes: American populations formerly known as V. FULVA, now are regarded as conspecific with Old World red fox (V. VULPES). STATUS: Native, Breeder, Uncommon, Present in Park;; ; Taxonomy Notes: The subspecies in the park may or may not be native to the US. The European subspecies prefers open habitats and was introduced for fox hgunting in colonial times. The park has some records from open areas, but the last reliable observed popukationoccurred along the Clingmans Dome road, which is densely forested. It is possible that thoise animals may represent the native subspecies, which tends to be replaced by the European animals (Kamel and Ballard, 2002 Wildlife Soc. Bulletin Vol. 30 #2)). According to zooarcheologist Carl Falk (pers comm) there is pre-historic record of red fox from the Southern App.;
