Summer 2009: Mist net survey and biological sampling of bats at Abraham Lincoln, Big South Fork, Cumberland Gap National Parks
Adams JJ, Roby PL, Gumbert MW, Copperhead Environmental Consulting, Inc. 2009. Summer 2009: Mist net survey and biological sampling of bats at Abraham Lincoln, Big South Fork, Cumberland Gap National Parks. National Park Service
Brief Description: Because of the special circumstances surrounding this project, mist netting protocols employed deviated from those guidelines recommended by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service(USFWS) Indiana Bat Recovery Team and outlined in the 2007 Draft Recovery Plan for the endangered Indiana bat. A total of four nights of netting was conducted at each park. Full Description: Copperhead Environmental Consulting, Inc. was contracted by Dr. Cathleen Webb of Western Kentucky University to conduct a mist net survey and collect biological samples (hair and guano) from all bat species captured in three national parks (Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area) in Kentucky. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (CUGA) contains 24,000 acres including 14,000 acres which are proposed wilderness and is located in southeast KY, southwest VA, and northeast TN. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BISO) contains 125,000 acres and is located in north-central TN and south-central KY. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park (ABLI) contains 146 acres and is located outside of Hodgenville, KY. In the parks that extended out of Kentucky (BISO, CUGA), sampling was only conducted within Kentucky state boundaries. Hair and guano samples were collected from each bat captured. These were sent to Dr. Cathleen Webb’s lab at Western Kentucky University where they were analyzed for mercury content. This is part of a broad study involving the bioaccumulation of mercury in the tissues of organisms.
