Park Species Detail: Garman (1991): 310 captures of 310 individuals during trapping in 1987 and 1988 in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats; 2nd most abundant small mammal trapped. Coman (1987 & 1981) reports this is a common species in all forested parts of Mount Desert Island, found at all elevations although most often in wet woodlands. Packie and Nadeau (1975): Present on MDI. Allen (1969): Present and common at Western Point; 5 individuals captured. Davis (1961): Trapped within spruce/fir study sites within the park. Calhoun (1956): trapped on MDI during 1951, exact locations unknown. Calhoun (1951) trapped on MDI during 1950, exact locations unknown. Calhoun (1950): Trapped on MDI during November 1949, exact locations unknown. Manville (1942): distributed over most of the island, but usually taken in moist lowland areas.
