Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) and Long (1987) report this species on MDI. Long (1987): Picture of a female saw-whet owl at Seal Cove on 12 April 1981 (photo by R. Long). Russell (1984?) Rare to uncommon resident; Four were heard on the night of 26 March 1969 in a dense spruce forest in the vicinity of Seal Cove (W. Russell); 2 nests have been found during June and occasional non-breeding birds have been found frequenting tree holes. Bond (1975): 3 nestlings and addled egg observed in spruce stub near Cape Road in mid June: previous nesting records pertain to roosting sites. Bond (1969) rare on MDI, nest was discovered in the cavity of a tree stub at Little Oak Hill near the old Seal Cove Road, another nest was found near the Bass Harbor Lighthouse road. Palmer (1949) considered a rare resident on MDI; nest was found in late May 1936 in a flicker hole 9 feet above the ground in a spruce stub on MDI. Bond (19??) rare resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Nest discovered near Little Oak Hill, late May, 1936. Sullivan (1937): Rare resident; observed at Seawall (see Observation). Eliot (1931) Not observed on MDI during June or July 1931 but previously reported from the island;, Park Species Data Source: Russell (1984?); Sullivan (1937) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Nests have been found on MDI (Witt 1997; Long 1987) but no details of these observations are given. Adamus (1983) breeding sporadically throughout Maine. Sibley (2000) year-round resident in Maine.
