The status of Northern Saw-whet Owl in the Grand Canyon region remains poorly understood. It has been documented in wooded areas as an irregular summer and winter resident, with occasional summer breeding and population irruptions in some winters. It may be at least a rare permanent resident of mixed conifer forests on the Kaibab Plateau, as it is in similar habitat on the Chuska Mountains and Defiance Plateau of the nearby Navajo Indian Reservation (LaRue in prep). Its presence on the Kaibab may be obscured by the difficulty of accessing the snow-covered plateau before the owls go silent in May (Wise-Gervais 2005a). There is a single record of one along the Colorado River at Kwagunt Marsh (RM 55) on 20 Feb 1996 (Michael J. Kearsley, Jeffery Bennett). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011.
