Notes
Park Species Detail: Checklist information (residency) updated 4/11/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): extremely plentiful in some years (1979; 1984) on MDI. Nests discovered at Otter Point and Ship Harbor in 1984. Present at Bass Harbor Head. Russell (1984?) very erratic, can be abundant in any season; common in the late 1950's and early 1960's; breeding birds at Ship Harbor; since 1964 they have been scarce or absent at all seasons and their place has been taken by the Red Crossbill; Bond's statement that a good Red Crossbill year is a poor one for White-wings and vice versa seems accurate. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Favour (1970): "terrific numbers of breeding White-winged Crossbills" during 1961. Bond (1969) abundant during some summers. Palmer (1949) common on MDI early in 1934 (Stupka). Bond (19??) resident, occasionally abundant (as in summer of 1949) but usually rather rare; juvenile birds have been observed. Tyson and Bond (1941): More common than Red Crossbill currently; although less common than Red Crossbill 20 years ago. Species present at Sea Wall and Wonderland. Sullivan (1937) Irregular and erratic visitor; common at times, seen frequently during the summer of 1924 and several seen 8 July 1927; often seen in winter; several seen on 20 December 1909 at Southwest Harbor; flock of about 27 found in red spruces at Jackson Memorial Laboratory; plentiful on Mt. Desert and nearby island in late summer of 1935. (lists other observations). Eliot (1931): observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 21 June 1916 and 11 October 1916. Allen (1899): irregular on MDI between 1880 and 1899; less frequently found than the red crossbill.., Park Species Data Source: Witt (1997); Sharp (1997); Long (1987); Russell (1984?); Duley and North (1984); Tyson and Bond (1941) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Breeding occasionally reported in the Otter Point area and Ship Harbor area (Witt 1997, Long 1987). Adamus (1983) sporadic breeder in Maine.
