Notes
Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Abundant everywhere in low woods. Responsible for one of the main displays of color; especially abundant locally in area 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), in the bottomland opposite Brickyard Road in area 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], and bottomlands of area 7 (Great Falls to Swain’s Lock). Fl. Throughout April and May, but at its peak in late April and early May. Occasionallly white-flowered. Bilton, 1991: beginning to flower. Wiegand, 2001b: An uncommon plant species occurring in rich floodplain forest on slightly elevated terraces above the river between the C&O Canal and the more open, scoured bedrock. Several dozen flowering Wild blue phlox (Phlox divaricata) were growing in a rich sandy substrate beneath a partial canopy Wild blue phlox is fairly common and widespread immediately upriver, so it probably occurs at other locations within this survey site. Found at 2 sites. A watch list (and otherwise uncommon) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.), Park Species Data Source: Bilton, 1991-Ferry Hill;Leeson, n.d.;Maxon, 1935;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
