Park Species Detail: Long (1987) frequently seen at Bass Harbor, Northeast Creek, and Duck Pond. Russell (1984?) Fairly common spring migrant, uncommon breeding bird, common to very common fall migrant, accidental in winter. Seen most frequently in Aunt Betty's Pond and Sand Beach Pond. Have bred in the Sieur de Monts Springs area (1964, 1971, J. Bond) and at Beaver Dam Pond (1968, W. Townsend). Seen in summer at Seawall Pond, Bass Harbor Marsh, Northeast Creek, and Seal Cove Pond. Adamus (1983): Maine is southern limit of its breeding range; breeding in scattered locations throughout Maine including eastern MDI. Favour (1970): Observed on 26 December 1959 during the MDI CBC; 2 females were observed somewhere in the area from Schooner Head to Sand Beach Lagoon. Bond (1969) seen frequently at Bass Harbor Marsh, Northeast Creek, and the duck pond near Western Mountain; in late June 1964 a female with her brood of still flightless young was flushed from the little stream that is the outlet of Sieur de Monts Spring. Palmer (1949) "Early winter records are for several seen on December 26, 1940 on Mt. Desert Island (Tyson and Bond, 1941: 54). Increase in abundance in Maine in the 1940's could be due to increasing breeding populations in the Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland, and adjacent areas. Bond (1948): Bond observed a male at the Duck Pond on the northern slope of Western Mountain in the first week of June 1947. Bond (19??) probably occasional summer resident; fairly common transient; breeds of "teal" have been observed on MDI. Tyson and Bond (1941): Uncommon on MDI; seen at Upper Hadlock Pond and sever shot on island during the fall of 1938.
