Park Species Detail: Fabre, 2005: The Herbarium at Wm and Mary lists a specimen Lonicera japonica var. chinesis 536941 collected in 1969 by Phyllis Kline along the Colonial Parkway This species may be associated with Salle's listing in her hardcopy of Lonicera japonica TSN 35283. See Lonicera japonica var. chinensis 536941 Vouchers./ NPFlora, Highly Invasive./Salle, 1972: Among the most ubiquitous ground cover plants of the woods along the Yorktown Colonial Parkway./Loetterle, 1970: part of a sparse sapling-shrub layer on Jamestown Island located chiefly along the road-cuts./Ingram, 1998: Very common; climbing on trees in forest edge./Hamilton, 2005: Syn for Lonicera japonica var. chinensis (P.W. Wats.) Baker TSN #536941./Hobson, 1998: Ubiquitous throughout the study area. Belden et al (1995) mentioned several of these exotic species as occurring within surveyed parcels along Yorktown Creek within Colonial National Historical Park./Belden, 1995: A prevalent exotic in forested bottomlands east of Route 17, and north of the Colonial Parkway./ Gounaris: 2000: present throughout the majority of the park; extremely widespread throughout Yorktown, Jamestown and the Colonial Parkway corridor. Seems to have no pattern of infestation, and is rarely found in very dense patches. Highly invasive, covering a relatively high percentage of the park. It is unrealistic to expect complete eradication of these species. Areas of critical habitats should be kept free (see reference for further discussion.)
