Park Species Detail: Hill, 1986: Native. Perennial herb. Inflorescence tinted maroon when immature. August-October. Fresh marsh, upper margin of salt marsh in brackish water. Frequent to infrequent on the island, abundant in some areas, such as Great Egging Island and the State Park. Where large colonies are formed. Frequent in MD overall. Reported as Phragmites communis Trin. by Higgins (Higgins #71), a synonym. MD & VA. Slides: B8d-1-5; B8d-7-10./ Hamilton, 2004: Hill listed this plant as native; it is now judged a serious invasive exotic. Another non-invasive form of Phragmites australis has been identified; it has not yet been found on Assateague Island (report from Jonathan Chase, ASIS Vegetation Technician)..
