Occurrence Notes
Black Rosy-Finch (formerly Rosy Finch) is an erratic winter visitor, occurring in flocks of up to 50 birds, along cliffs and talus throughout the region. They have been seen along both rims and the Vermilion Cliffs. Many years may pass between irruptions; they have been seen in the region in 1924, 1930, 1956, 1983, 1997, and 2006. A bird seen by Eddie McKee in 1930 may have belonged to the species Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, but the identification was uncertain. Any flock of Black Rosy-Finches should be closely examined for other Rosy-Finch species. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
