Park Species Detail: Breeding on MDI (Witt 1997, Long 1987). Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Abundant on MDI. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Common resident. Inhabit all but the most homogeneous spruce-fir forests. The Beech Mountain Trail and the Western Mountain Fire Road are typical locations. A flock of over 200 took off from Bass Harbor Light and headed for the Gott Islands on 4 October 1968 (W. Russell et al.). Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Allen (1969): 1 nest found in the Western Point study area. Bond (1969) occurs throughout the year on MDI. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird; also observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Bond (19??) common resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common on MDI. Sullivan (1937): Abundant resident; nests containing young noted on 21-31 May 1924; young seen being fed in nest on 12 July 1927. Farley (1935) reported 14 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Anthony (1933): 509 banded at Great Head between 12 August 1929 and 26 June 1933. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area, distributed over whole area, settled or wild. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 3 June 1915. Reiche and Burton (1924) observed or collected in the Oak Meadow region east of Newport (=Champlain) Mountain between 1 July and 8 August, 1924.
