Notes
Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis caniceps) gray-headed race: * The gray-headed race of Dark-eyed Junco is a common permanent resident of mixed conifer and ponderosa pine forests throughout the region. It is also a common winter resident and spring and fall migrant in pinyon-juniper woodland, Great Basin desertscrub, and grasslands, but occurs only irregularly as a migrant along the Colorado River. Migrants and wintering birds are present from 8 Aug to 13 May, but most fall migrants do not begin to appear until mid-to-late September. Miller (1949) considered the gray-headed juncos breeding in the region to be an intergrade between the nominate gray-headed race (J. h. caniceps) and the red-backed race (J. h. dorsalis) found around Flagstaff and farther south.
