Notes
Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Alosa pseudoharengus, alewife (anadromous, native) Alewives are native to the east coast of North America, from South Carolina into Canada. They are anadromous and during the Spring move up most coastal rivers from Red Bay, Labrador to South Carolina to spawn. Alewives have also been introduced into some Virginia reservoirs.Alewives tend to migrate earlier than blueback herring from March through May when water temperatures are 52-60 of. After spawning, adults return to the sea. Their normal life span is 8 years. Alewife migrations still occur in Rock Creek./, Park Species Data Source: Britt 1993
