Occurrence Notes
An erratic winter resident on both rims and near Mt. Trumbull. Like the Black Rosy-Finch, irruptions of this species are typically many years apart. Pine Grosbeaks have been seen in the region during the winters of 1905, 1930, 1950, 1957, 1968, 1980, 1982, and 2005. The only summer records are from June and July 1929, when at least six individuals were present at Jacob Lake (D. Irvin Rasmussen, Charles T. Vorhies, Florence Merriam Bailey) and from the summers of 2007 and 2008 when researchers conducting surveys for Kaibab National Forest recorded them in several locations on the Kaibab Plateau. The species breeds in the White Mountains in east-central Arizona, but is otherwise unknown in the state during summer months. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
