Notes
Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997; latin name used in report (Gavia adamsii) was in error. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if species was observed within park boundaries. Maine Audubon Society (1992) summarizes results of loon breeding surveys on many ponds on MDI. Mittelhauser (1991) 6 observed from Great Head to Hunter's Beach on 20 January 1991; 2 observed from Seawall Point to Ship Harbor area on 20 January 1991. Long (1987): MDI is near the southern limit of the breeding range for this species. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. The Nature Conservancy (1985): Reports 1 pair on Lower Hadlock Pond and a female on a nest on June 8-15, 1985. Russell (1984?) Very common spring, fall, and winter, uncommon breeder. Breeding lakes include Long Pond, Echo Lake, Eagle Lake, Somes Pond, Witch Hole Pond, and Seal Cove Pond. Duley and North (1984) observed from Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Bond (1969) MDI is near the southern limit of their breeding range; the majority of those seen during the summer are non-breeding individuals; particularly numerous off Pretty Marsh and Indian Point. Nest with 1 egg was reported on the southern neck of Long Pond and young have been observed elsewhere. Bond (19??) Resident on MDI; rare as a breeding bird, but not uncommon off the coast in summer; common transient and winter resident; one or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): A pair nests almost every year near the upper end of Long Pond; see picture of nest on Long Pond in Tyson and Bond (1941). Sullivan (1937) Common on the large lakes; bred in years past and may still breed in the Great Pond area. Farley (1935): 10 birds observed on MDI between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during June 1931; reported to breed on Echo Lake. Allen (1899): Not uncommon on MDI between 1880 and 1899., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al.
