Notes
Park Species Detail: Checklist information (abundance, residency) updated 4/9/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Witt (1997) Used to breed near Northeast Harbor back in the 1930's. Long (1987): Become scarce on MDI in recent years; used to be present at Bass Harbor Marsh. Russell (1984?) only 4 recorded sightings, all since 1958 (see observations). A handwritten note also lists a record on 10 April 1981 at Salisbury Cove (fide W. Townsend) (MBL 3(2)). Casual. A flurry of records in 1971-72 might indicate a resurgence. Bond (1969) has become scarce on MDI in recent years, formerly common, one or two individuals frequented Bass Harbor Marsh. Bond (19??) Summer resident of MDI; common; one or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): "Several nesting colonies on the island". Numerous summer resident of MDI. Sullivan (1937): Common summer resident, April - October; breeds near Northeast Harbor. Farley (1935) reports 2 birds at Mount Desert Island between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June & July 1931, less generally distributed; 2 or 3 pairs were acting as if nesting at the south end of Eagle Lake on 2 July 1931. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins during 1916. Allen (1899): common on MDI between 1880 and 1899., Park Species Data Source: Witt (1997); Long (1987); Russell (1984?); Bond (1969); Eliot (1931) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Formerly bred on MDI (Witt 1997, Tyson and Bond 1941, Sullivan 1937, Eliot 1931). Now found on MDI during migration.
