Park Species Detail: 'Britt, 1993: Notemigonus crysoleucas, golden shiner (resident, native)./ The range of the golden shiner is the Atlantic slope from the Maritime Provinces south to Florida, west to Texas, and north to Saskatchewan. Adults reach a standard length of 53-234 mm (2.0-9.2 in). The golden shiner eats equal amounts of plant and animal material includmg cladocerans, midges, flying insects, algae, dragonfly nymphs, and mollusks. This species is found in sloughs, lakes, impoundments, ponds, and pools of low-gradient streams and ditches. They exhibit a strong schooling tendency throughout their lives.
