Native to most of eastern North America, including the Mississippi River system. They occur as far north as Quebec and as far south as Texas and Florida. They were introduced into southern Calif. In 1891 and their wide use as a bait fish has resulted in their spread to most suitable waters in California, including the Sacramento-San Joaquin systm, and the Colorado River.; Data Source: Moyle, P.B. 1976.
