All sources cite this species as Rufous-sided Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) which has been split into two species Eastern Towhee (P. erythrophthalmus) and Spotted Towhee (P. maculatus). The park lays on the border between both species's ranges. One historic record (Ducey 1983) refers to this species as "This western species...to the complete exclusion of the eastern race." This would suggest that those observed during this expedition were, at least mostly, Spotted Towhee, but one can not know for sure.
