Occurrence Notes
An abundant winter resident and spring and fall migrant along the Colorado River, with a few records of birds lingering through the summer. It was previously considered an uncommon winter resident (Brown et al. 1985) but has increased significantly, with a high count of 2,380 birds recorded between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry on 8 Jan 1998 (John R. Spence, Charles T. LaRue, Tom M. Haberle). Most birds along the river are seen between Glen Canyon Dam and the beginning of the Inner Gorge (RM 78). There is only one record away from the Colorado River: a female at the Desert View Sewage Lagoons, 30 Mar 2009 (Brian P. Gatlin). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
