Park Species Detail: Mittelhauser (1991) 3 observed from Great Head to Hunter's Beach on 20 January 1991; 8 observed from Seawall Point to Ship Harbor area on 20 January 1991.
Long (1987): summer resident of lakes and streams of inland Maine; nested at Graham Lake near Ellsworth.
Russell (1984?) Very common fall through spring, accidental in summer. Reports a maximum count of 150+ in Seawall area on 19 March 1957 (W. Mann and R. Ernst), also 11 at the Trenton Bridge on 1 May 1970 (M. Leach).
Bond (1948): Female observed at Somesville in summer.
Bond (19??) transient and winter visitant; common; said to have once nested on MDI; currently nests on the mainland in Hancock County (at Graham Lake).
Tyson and Bond (1941): "said to have once nested on Mt. Desert Island".
