Park Species Detail: Checklist information (nativity) updated 4/11/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Populations are known to fluctuate on MDI. Russell (1984?) uncommon resident; 8 males were heard drumming from a single spot on Route 233 at the south end of Eagle Lake on 28 May 1973 (W. Russell). Bond (1969) abundant on MDI 40 years ago. Davis (1961) Observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Palmer (1949) on MDI, Hallock (1899) reported that grouse were plentiful in the summer of 1899. The heaviest bird reported (25.64 ounces) came from ANP on MDI. Bond (19??) common resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Present on MDI. Sullivan (1937): Abundant resident; nest with 12 eggs observed May 19th, another with 9 eggs observed 23 June 1924 (no details of these observations). Farley (1935) reports 6 pairs of this species on MDI between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, less generally distributed. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 12 June 1915.
