From Brian Gatlin: In the case of Asio flammeus (Short-eared Owl), I believe that it was included on a previous list on the basis of its inclusion of a BLM checklist of the birds of the Arizona Strip, which is an area with incomplete overlap of the Grand Canyon checklist area. Because I was able to track down no specific records (either within or outside the Grand Canyon area) and not knowing whether those records fell within the region I was considering, I felt it best to err on the side of caution and leave it off the list (Gatlin 2013). ; Data Source: Birds of Grand Canyon National Park
