Occurrence Notes
An abundant winter resident along the Colorado River from Glen Canyon Dam to Soap Creek (RM 11), and occurs rarely downstream to the Little Colorado River (RM 61). It was previously considered a rare winter visitor (Brown et al. 1987), but has increased dramatically, with high counts of up to 1,100 seen between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry in January (Spence et al. 2009). It is a rare migrant at open water elsewhere in the region, where it has been seen in every month of the year, though there is only one record from July. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
