Park Species Detail: Common breeder on MDI (Witt 1997, Long 1987). Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Present around the edges of Big Heath. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall; rare in early winter; maximum spring count was of 15 birds singing on 28 April 1968 along the Western Mountain Fire Road (W. Russell); also 9 at Otter Point on 13 October 1973 (W. Altman); the beech cliffs trail and the Otter Point are typical habitats for this species; early winter records are concentrated at Otter Point. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Favour (1970): observed during the MDI CBC on 31 December 1965. Notes that the last Christmas time record for a winter wren was in 1934. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point; singing males observed (presumably on territory). Bond (1969) Observed most frequently in tangled wet woodlands on the western side of MDI. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird. Bond (1955): Nesting out of park at Pretty Marsh. Long (1951) singing male observed at Valley Cove during June 1950. Palmer (1949): One was seen on 24 December 1934 on MDI. Bond (19??) summer resident, formerly more numerous, now rather rare to fairly common; juvenile birds have been observed. Tyson and Bond (1941): Formerly common during the summer on MDI, now decidedly scarce. Sullivan (1937): Common summer resident, April to November (Pellew). Farley (1935) reported 5 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; present high above the west side of Jordan Pond. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 18 June 1916.
