Park Species Detail: Mittelhauser (1991) 7 observed from Great Head to Hunter's Beach on 20 January 1991; 5 observed from Seawall Point to Ship Harbor area on 20 January 1991. Long (1987): Occasional summer resident; female and brood observed at Northeast Harbor "a few years ago". Russell (1984?) very common fall through spring, rare breeder, rare non-breeding summerer. Broods seen in July in Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor (Little Long Pond), and Jordan Pond. The cove in front of Sand Beach and the Seawall area always seems to have a few birds. Duley and North (1984) observed from Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Adamus (1983) sporadic breeding in Maine, primarily inland. Bond (1969) forty or more years ago, this duck was often encountered off the coast of MDI, but it has since become scarce in summer. A female with her brood was reported at Northeast Harbor (no dates given). Palmer (1949) "much less numerous than 60 or 80 years ago". Bond (19??) summer visitant, transient and winter resident; most numerous on migration and in winter. Tyson and Bond (1941): Rare in summer around MDI, formerly more common.
