Native to Maine (Palmer 1949) and to North America (Palmer 1976, Sibley 2000).

Witt (1997) Common spring migrant, occasional breeder, common fall migrant in the MDI region.

Park Species Detail: Adamus (1983) breeding throughout Maine, including MDI. Long (1987): No nests found on MDI but broods have been observed at Seal Cove Pond, Hodgdon Pond, Aunt Bettys Pond, and Breakneck Ponds. Russell (1984?) Fairly common spring and fall migrant and breeder. Includes many observations including 38 observed in Aunt Betty's Pond on 6 October 1973 (W. Russell et al.). Prior to 1940, Ring-necked Ducks had never been reported on MDI (Bond 1971). At the present, they are possibly the most common fresh water breeding duck. Pairs have been seen on Seal Cove Pond, Hodgdon Pond, Beaver Dam Pond, Breakneck Pond, and Aunt Betty's Pond. Bond (1969) prior to 1940, this duck had never been reported from MDI; broods of young have been observed on Hodgdon's Pond, Aunt Bettys Pond, and the Breakneck Ponds. Long (1953) a well established summer resident, 3 pairs at Seal Cove Pond on 10 June 1952 (R. Long). Bond (1948): 5 male and 2 females observed from June 8 to June 28, 1948 at the lower end of Hodgdon Pond. Bond (19??)
