A common to abundant winter resident and spring and fall migrant along the Colorado River, with occasional records of birds lingering into summer. It was previously considered uncommon in winter (Brown et al. 1985) but has increased, with 250 or more individuals often present (Spence et al. 2009). Wintering birds are found primarily from Glen Canyon Dam to Soap Creek (RM 11), with high numbers present from November through February (Spence et al. 2009).
