    Long (1987): several nests observed at Otter Point and Ship Harbor in 1984; Witt (1997) reports that 2 juvenile Red Crossbills were nesting in "Acadia National Park". Adamus (1983) breeding distribution is erratic from year to year in Maine.

Notes
Park Species Detail: Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if species was recorded within park boundaries. Long (1987): Present on MDI since at least 1945; fluctuating populations from year to year; nests discovered at Otter Point and Ship Harbor in 1984. Present at Bass Harbor Head. Russell (1984?) very erratic, can be abundant in any season; breeding can take place in any month; present at Ship Harbor in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Favour (1970): Al albino and 4 normal plumaged individuals observed on 26 December 1959 during the MDI CBC at Hunters Beach Head (see observation) Allen (1969): Present at Western Point. Bond (1969) from 1920 to 1940 this species was extremely rare in summer, since 1945 it has become occasionally abundant. Davis (1961): Observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the summer of 1959; also observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Bond (19??) resident, sometimes common, at other times rare or absent; formerly more numerous than the White-winged Crossbill; 1 or more nests have been found. Long (1951) adults feeding young out of nest was observed on MDI on 14 August 1949. Tyson and Bond (1941): Twenty years ago, this species was more common than the White-winged Crossbill on MDI. Currently White-winged Crossbills are more common than Red Crossbills. Not seen lately until late summer. More common in winter. Sullivan (1937): rare irregular visitor, recorded June 1899 by F.H. Allen; other dates given (few locations); abundant 20 years ago, year after year, about Asticou (Eliot). Farley (1935) observed 10 individuals at Bar Harbor on 12 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; one seen on June 28, 1931. Reiche and Burton (1924) observed or collected in the Oak Meadow region east of Newport (=Champlain) Mountain between 1 July and 8 August, 1924.
