Park Species Detail: Shriner (2001) provides the most recent published records; Alsop (2001) considers this a possible breeding species but there has never been a confirmed breeding record; Park Observations include a record of young birds that may not be fully flighted being ATBI Sensitivity = Park-Only Species Notes: Uncommon Permanent Resident, high elevation (above 3,500') (erratic); At least nine species exist in North America and additional species exist outside North America (AOU 1998). See Groth (1988) for information suggesting that Appalachian Red Crossbills comprise two distinct species. Sympatric breeding without interbreeding STATUS: Native, Resident, Uncommon, Present in Park; POLICY: FSC, SC/S1;; ; Sensitivity Notes: breeds most of the year and a southern app. Subspecies; Taxonomy Notes: presumed breeder; General Notes: Shriner (2001) provides the most recent published records; Alsop (2001) considers this a possible breeding species but there has never been a confirmed breeding record; Park Observations include a record of young birds that may not be fully flighted being fed by adults in the park; Robinson (1990) does not cite any confirmed breeding records for Tennessee but does cite likely evidence from the park and from outside the park in North Carolina; park collections house 3 park specimens; Chicago Academy of Sciences house seven park specimens.
