Park Species Detail: Witt (1997): Formerly more common. Typical spots are Otter Point, Great Heath, and the Western Mountain trail. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): widespread on MDI in the summer; formerly numerous at Wonderland and ship Harbor. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) common breeder; Otter Point, Great Heath at Seawall, and the Western Mountain Trail are good places to see this species. Bond (1969) widespread on MDI in summer; numerous in the Ship Harbor area. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird. Palmer (1949) Nests and eggs mentioned by Tyson and Bond (1941; 65) on June 2 on MDI. Bond (19??) fairly common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Never encountered more than a pair in any one locality; found near Bar Harbor, Asticou, and Northeast Harbor. Sullivan (1937): Summer resident; common from May to September (Pellew). Farley (1935) reported 6 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; for many years a pair have nested in the lofty old spruce near the Kimball House. Also found between Bar Harbor and Newport Mountain on 9 July 1931. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 11 and 12 June 1916.
