Park Species Detail: Checklist information (nativity) updated 4/11/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Witt (1997) Reports this species in areas adjacent to the park. Mittelhauser (1991) 8 observed from Great Head to Hunter's Beach on 20 January 1991; 19 observed from Seawall Point to Ship Harbor area on 20 January 1991. Russell (1984?) Abundant to very abundant fall through spring, rare in summer. Notes that the waters off Sand Beack, the inner part of Southwest Harbor, and Bartlett's Landing are all good spots to see this species. Palmer (1949) One with scoters on 28 August 1937 in Mount Desert Narrows (T. Eliot). Bond (19??) transient and winter resident; common; occasionally seen in summer but does not breed here. Sullivan (1937): Winter visitor, most abundant in late fall and early winter; observed at Northeast Harbor on 7 June 1924.
