Notes
Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Witt (1997) lists egg dates, but no breeding evidence is documented. Breeding on MDI (Long 1987), but no specific records listed. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Nests found along gravel roads and carriage paths on MDI. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall, rare in winter; early arrival date of one bird at Great Head on 28 March 1951 (E. Anthony); the winter records are virtually all from feeding stations. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Bond (1969) more frequently found in mixed deciduous/coniferous woodland and is numerous on the burnt lands. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird. Long (1951) nest found at Southwest Harbor on 12 June 1950 containing 4 eggs. Palmer (1949) early date is 28 March 1931 on MDI observed by Mrs. E.A. Anthony. Bond (19??) common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Present on MDI. Sullivan (1937): Abundant summer resident from April to October, nest observed on 28 May 1924 (no location). Farley (1935) reported 16 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Anthony (1933): 3 banded at Great Head between 12 August 1929 and 26 June 1933. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, less generally distributed; steadily diminishing in numbers, "perhaps discouraged by too many Rockefeller roads." Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 2 June 1915. Allen (1899): abundant on MDI between 1880 and 1899; but much reduced in numbers in 1899., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al.
