Park Species Detail: DATA SOURCE (CONTINUED): Bond (1971); Bond (1969); long (1951); Farley (1935); Reiche and Burton (1924) Woods (1997): 67 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Woods (1995): 53 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 19 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Long (1987): Nest found north of Cadillac Mtn in 1961, and a pair nested "many years ago" on Little Brown Mountain. Major (1987): 47 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): 51 were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Uncommon spring migrant and breeder, common fall migrant, uncommon in winter. Nest found north of Cadillac Mountain in 1961 (J. Bond). Maximum fall count of 26 from Cadillac Summit on 23 October 1972 (W. Russell). Probably breeds in the vicinity of Champlain Mountain, but no nest has been found. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Bond (1971); Nest found north of Cadillac in 1961. Bond (1969) observed frequently soaring over open country near Bar Harbor and the Emery District. A nest was found in 1961 in the woodland north of Cadillac Mountain and a pair nested about 25 years ago on Little Brown Mountain. Bond (19??) very rare summer resident; juvenile individuals have been observed. Long (1951) a pair were seen in the Western Mountains during January 1950; a large male was observed chasing a Marsh Hawk at Bar Harbor on 29 May 1950. Tyson and Bond (1941): May occasionally nest on MDI. Sullivan (1937): Resident, not uncommon, especially in the fall. Farley (1935) reports 1 nest with 1 young at Beaver Brook Trail on Mount Desert Island on 14 June 1934. Reiche and Burton (1924) observed or collected in the Oak Meadow region east of Newport (=Champlain) Mountain between 1 July and 8 August, 1924.
