Park Species Detail: Nests have been discovered on Mount Desert Island (Witt 1997). Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Uncommon permanent resident. The residential parts of towns, Sieur de Monts Spring, and the Acadia Mountain Fire Road are all locations where Hairy Woodpeckers are frequently encountered. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point. Bond (1969) common resident on MDI. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird; also observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Bond (19??) common resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Great deal rarer than the Downy Woodpecker on MDI; decidedly more plentiful in late summer and fall. Sullivan (1937): Fairly common resident; eggs observed 19 May and 24 May 1924; young being fed on 7 June. Farley (1935) reported 7 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; breeding at the northeast end of Brown Mountain (= Norumbega Mountain) where the path leaves the highway; also observed at Newport Mountain on 4 July 1931. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 3 June 1915.
