Park Species Detail: Woods (1997): 101 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if species was recorded within park boundaries. Woods (1995): 131 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 195 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Long (1987): Ospreys have occupied the same nest at Blagden Preserve for years; once numerous and widespread on MDI, now found only locally. Major (1987): 288 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): 234 individuals were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Common spring through fall, accidental in winter. There are no known active nests on MDI, although the remains can be seen in several areas. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Bond (1969) not the commonest, but the most frequently seen of the birds of prey on MDI. Davis (1961): Observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the summer of 1959. Palmer (1949) "one seen on February 19, 1947 in the Bar Harbor region, Mt. Desert Island (Hersey in Gross, 1947f: 33)." Bond (19??) common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common on MDI; often seen in Somes Sound. Sullivan (1937): Summer resident, common from April to October; 2 eggs observed May 24, 1924 in nest near Hulls Cove (Pellew). Farley (1935) reports 6 pair on Mount Desert Island between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931) Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; observed at Somes Sound, Hadlock Pond, Long Pond. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 6 June 1916.
