Park Species Detail: Woods (1997): 40 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if observations were within park boundaries. Woods (1995): regularly observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 51 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Long (1987): few young have been raised successfully on MDI in recent years, but are seen almost as frequently as they were during the first half of the century. Major (1987): 121 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): 79 were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Uncommon resident. As of 1972, there were about 5 eagles resident on MDI. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Favour (1970): 11 to 15 observed on 29 December 1962 during the MDI CBC. Bond (1969) few young have been raised successfully in recent years on MDI. "¿eagles are in my experience as frequently seen on the island as during the first half of the century." Palmer (1949) Storm on 9 June 1933 blew down a nest with 2 eaglets on MDI. Bond (19??) resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Nests recorded from within park on MDI (lists locations). At least 6 nests in the immediate vicinity of MDI. Sullivan (1937): Resident but becoming scarcer; 5 pairs nest on MDI. Farley (1935) reports 2 pairs on Mount Desert Island between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931) Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 17 June 1916. Reiche and Burton (1924) observed or collected in the Oak Meadow region east of Newport (=Champlain) Mountain between 1 July and 8 August, 1924. Allen (1899): not very common on MDI between 1880 and 1899.
